In Sumo or most other servers, since it's FFA, if they are new and don't quite know how to play, they aren't hurting their 'team' so they most likely won't get kicked.
exactly

the team thing makes fortress amazing
and hard to enter

also
i got a message from someone (don't bother asking who)
>Also I did read your posts about the issue with spectators and being able to make it more social (even though it was last year). I still think a simple solution can solve this all. By this I mean having a bot in the server streaming all the info to the 'spectator server' so all the spectators can join there and watch while only having one bot fill the spot on the Ladle server.

this seems to have been implemented elsewhere

not only does it allow players to use cameras to view competition games
perhaps record their viewings thus making vid production easier
but also
it would allow new players an opportunity to see what is going on...

imho
this is essential

my impression of the discussion
is that the reason it hasn't taken off is because people are thinking it is one thing we have to agree on
whereas
i think we have to introduce several changes simultaneously...
hold the line
