It starts counting from when you sign up... So everything that it is posted between your current visit and your previous visit is displayed in the new posts menu...

It is based on log-in times. Since you closed your browser and openned a new one, the cookies that tell the server that you've logged out and logged in again tells the server this information and so any posts after your log off is new. Since it was immediate, there are no new posts.

Similar reason as to why your first login had nothing new. Everything was before your login, so it was old.

when you log out and in, all post in the middle will be marked as new.

Yeah... But it's really based on sessions. When your browser closes it ends the session and phpBB assumes you've read everything you want to- and therefor resets the list of "new" topics.

I've had my browser accidentally quit (either because of my own goofy brain, or because it crashed on me, because my computer is a pos.) Or sometimes I just have to leave because I can't read everything right now. It would be nice if it could keep track of what I *actually* read instead of closing everything off. There could always be a button to close everything should I choose to use it.
