restricting high-ping players

What do you want to see in Armagetron soon? Any new feature ideas? Let's ponder these ground breaking ideas...

restricting high-ping players

Post by 2020 »

can there be a check done on the server
to disallow players if their ping is too high?

is there a command to eg allow high ping players to watch only?

this might lead to exlusive servers
and you kind have that already
with private settings lan etc

but it might be useful in the future sometime
and effectively create 'geographic' locations

for example
i don't like the idea of playing for my country
since country is an outdates institution for me
but if a server is locate in scotland, then assume my ping will be pretty low
and hence if i want super, high-quality games
i would play in 'scotland'

this would also allow some kind of fairness in future tournaments...

Ah, no, that just plain sucks. Some bzflag servers have such a restriction, and it makes me want to never play bzflag again. I hate being kicked for having 200ms of ping.
Note that bzflag is also badly programmed in that respect IMHO, it seems to give high- ping players an advantage over low- ping ones. Arma isn't like that and if you have a high ping you're free to try to deal with it. Players with a low ping don't necessarily play better than high- pinged ones.

Additionally, pings in Armagetron can be utterly unreliable at times. It'd suck to have everyone at a 150-250ms ping, then a bug causes them all to jump to twice that and everyone gets kicked.

i don't think the idea has merit for implementation now
i was wondering how tricky it might be to implement
just for future possibilities
is all

stay cool

Implementation would be really easy, probably. Maybe you can add it youeself with scripting (or hopefully not).

I think mechanisms that allow people to be snobbier than they already are are bad.

Not momentarily, but over the course of a single round. Boot on an average over 300. Easy and effective :D

my god

I don't plan to cut anyone from a server because of ping. I was only wondering if it was possible, and how easy it would be. If this game were really successful, there will be servers in australia. Players might play their games on australian servers, thus they may form australian teams, and then it would be interesting to see what happens when they challenge other teams... wrt to ping. The ping is a major consideration if games get really serious.

It was more musings than anything else.

Aussie servers are expensive... But I might be able to trial hosting one if someone wants to get a 32-slot or commit to a 16-slot for 3 months.

Aussie server please. I'm totally new and play in empty servers to try and improve a bit.. real players usually leave after one round against me prolly because I'm too boring to play against and I have a ping of 500-700. Yes I'm in Australia and yes I'm on dialup.

Haha oh well, it's still fun. Except one day I want to become really pro and whoop rude people who think they're hot shit.

Can't you guys just do it manually? I only kick people with high ping if its over an average of 500.

I thought those high-pingers only 'cause themselves to lag. it doesn't affect other people.
