so..

1) A fortress server where to train newbies hosted in ? (steammachine?).

2) A sumo server for all "kinds" of players hosted in ? (2020's server?)

3) A fortress server for "pros"="experienced noobs" hosted in ? (wrtl's server?)

- developers should work first in the server 1 and then, with a more acceptable version, in the server 3, to get back BUG cries.

- the server 3 wont be showed in master list (TALK_TO_MASTER 0), so fortress players can meet there without problems and newbies can be integrated gradually. Info about how to connect there will be showed in server 1 and 2. In this way the access is free for everybody, and not only for an "elite", but unprobably newbies will join first times with a custom connect. In italy we say "pigliare due piccioni con una fava", to kill two birds with one stone.

- we have to decide where to host servers 1, 2 and 3.

The idea is to give double bandwith to each player, hoping this will help with lags.

In theory, your idea might be implementable, but currently it only affects the max players allowed. After work, I'll look into calculating bandwidth based on players connects vs max. Good idea.
- What about it luke?

- last, we have to decide how to pay servers. steammachine is free, but 2020's and wrtl's ones need help by the community, if the project is to give those to the community. I think if most of active fortress players pay a little (and we are talking about 1 or 2 euros/mounth) we can host them without problems.

I'm in the middle of moving, and after that possibly focusing on improving my arma hosting services.

wrtl's server is online.
well, it is the better server where I've ever played. :o

@wrtl: how do you think to pay it? should the community help? do you need help with administration and other stuff like that?
you know that Im glad to help :D
thanks for your hosting.

@luke: maybe, now that wrtl hosted it, we could use the 2020 for the sumo.

Yeah, I wanted to write an announcement for the server and everything, but forgot about it/had no time to do it/<insert other lame excuses here>.

Well, anyways, I posted the server specs already. The actual arma server has standard fortress settings+wall shrink, free teamshuffling, no autojoin, reduced spam protection and I set DEDICATED_FPS to 100 in the hope to reduce lag effects.

I can currently pay for it, but what I need you guys to do is give it a decent name :P
I'll see about remote administration, I hope it won't be necessary…

Preferaby without “wrtl” in the name :)
I wanna be able to join the server under my normal name without having people I've never seen online asking me if I could host a server for them…

Welcome to my world. Thing is, I don't host any servers.
(and there's nothing normal about your name ;))

It's a very nice server btw. Those who cry "lag" are just rubbish.
How about just "Classic Fortress". But you may want to alter it in a few ways, like getting rid of that troublesome winzone, so it would no longer be "Classic".
Don't ask me. I only come up with stupid names.

Isn't Classic Fortress too generic? I think it needs at least a unique identifier (like Tigers, <strike>CVS</strike>, Bugfarm, ...).

It's probably gonna be two servers anyways. One tournament fortress server without team balancing and all that stuff, and another server with those features enabled to be more suitable for everyday play.

I was thinking about a script reading the server logs and switching into tournament mode if someone says “TOURNAMENT ON” or so and switching it off again if someone says “TOURNAMENT OFF” or the server goes empty, but I still wonder if that's a good idea and won't be abused.
Maybe I'll add a 5- round delay until both take effect so random idiots can't screw up a tournament game…

About the names: Yeah, classic is too generic and doesn't say anything :(
