Here you can discuss Armagoshdarn, settings specific to it, what you think about it, etc.

Fuk You and DoS attack on the server

Post by 2b|!2b? »

I don't know about you but I have the feeling that Fuk You, a few seconds after he left, flooded the server.
This happened at about 10:00PM PST.

backfiring attacks

Post by 2b|!2b? »

Yes, perhaps they backfired. But if Fuk You kept his language acceptable, he would not be kicked out at the first place....

Im not positive this is the same guy but i had a problem with a guy being an idiot on my server, after repeatedly telling him to leave and kicking him i finally had to blacklist his ip. Shortly thereafter i recieved a ICMP flood attack from a different ip on his network, after dealing with my isp and getting those kind of attacks filtered, i reported his ip with an attachment of my logs to his isp, so dont be surprised if he isnt around anymore.

Zapple, a flood attack is when a large number of packet are transmitted to a host in the hope to saturate the connection, disrupting normal operation because either
a) the real data cant pass through because too much "garbage" packet are sent on the line
b) forcing the host to process a heavy number of request that are not important, thus not having enough ressources to process the real request, in this case the game.

Because it is such a know attack for so long ago, there arent any ISP that dont have clause saying that they will ban you if you ever do it. Also, as described before, if you are able to link back an attack to a specific person, and contact their ISP, most ISP will be VERY glad to just flush that customer without much of an after thought.

This technique is often used in REAL LIFE too. One example that keep coming over and over is when french truck driver want to protest something, they put lots of their truks on one highway. It disrupt normal transport as all the space is already occupied by unnecessary traffic.

Well the name said it anyway.

It like is somebody would like to disrupt microsoft web site, that person just need to have many many friend surf randomly on the site at one specific time.

It goes in line with "The world would shake if all the Chinesses decided to start jumping around at the same time" (1). A very large number of simultaneous action can disrupt a big system, such as the earth.

1) It was actually tried for real. Ok, not all the chineses, but like all their school childrens. IIRC, it didnt produce any mesurable effect. But the myth is there to stay.
