TheServerPharm AU is now open! Aussie gameservers!

Post by compguygene »

After 6 months of waiting, a deal finally opened up on a basic OpenVZ Australian VPS that fit my small budjet! So, for now there are 3 Aussie servers:
Ladle xx (TheServerPharmAU) which is a standard Ladle server, but normally set for 8 player teams, except during ladles.
Aussie Outback Sumo. Standard Sumo, but with chutes, same map as Twixted Xats Sumo. MAX_PLAYERS 8 MAX_CLIENTS 10
Aussie Outback Fortress. Standard Ladle server, but setup the same as my Ladle Practice Servers. Any authenticated player can lock teams and setup a match. MAX_PLAYERS 12 MAX_CLIENTS 16.

If you would like to really get your skills up to be able to cope with "whatever" ping....try these servers out!

Hey, there's no packet loss there. Stop whining. :P

Euro ping if anyone cares:

Code: Select all

$ ping -c 10 27.50.94.115
PING 27.50.94.115 (27.50.94.115): 56 data bytes
64 bytes from 27.50.94.115: icmp_seq=0 ttl=47 time=523.382 ms
64 bytes from 27.50.94.115: icmp_seq=1 ttl=47 time=505.590 ms
64 bytes from 27.50.94.115: icmp_seq=2 ttl=47 time=676.180 ms
64 bytes from 27.50.94.115: icmp_seq=3 ttl=47 time=596.832 ms
64 bytes from 27.50.94.115: icmp_seq=4 ttl=47 time=518.314 ms
64 bytes from 27.50.94.115: icmp_seq=5 ttl=47 time=746.045 ms
64 bytes from 27.50.94.115: icmp_seq=6 ttl=47 time=665.680 ms
64 bytes from 27.50.94.115: icmp_seq=7 ttl=47 time=586.741 ms
64 bytes from 27.50.94.115: icmp_seq=8 ttl=47 time=507.816 ms
64 bytes from 27.50.94.115: icmp_seq=9 ttl=47 time=737.171 ms

--- 27.50.94.115 ping statistics ---
10 packets transmitted, 10 packets received, 0.0% packet loss
round-trip min/avg/max/stddev = 505.590/606.375/746.045/89.440 ms
Seems it stopped spiking as badly. Not that it looks comfortable.

You should try playing in the server... for now.

If people like it some, when I can afford to, I will replace it with a better server. I am leery of paying double the price, if nobody cares at all. But, for some players, the ping variance appears to be within a spread of 15-30 ping on ~300ms that is 5%-10%. Also, when you experience the effects of CYCLE_PING_RUBBER which I have not tweaked yet, it helps.
After the Ladle, I am going to attempt to optimize the network settings, cycle_rubber_ping settings, etc. They are all what I use as defaults in most TheServerPharm Servers. You must always keep in mind that the traceroutes alone only tell part of the picture! There are plenty of good reasons why you really need to adjust the network settings and CYCLE_PING_RUBBER to your exact situation.

EDIT: It has been my experience that new servers are more spikey than ones that have been around.... I could give you a kinda geeky explanation of that. As the server gets more traffic from given points, the the internet routers involved do some optimizations of the processing of the packets.

EDIT: After warming up in a fortress server, I went to the TheServerPharm AU ladle server. I found that MAX_IN_RATE 300, MAX_OUT_RATE 300, and CYCLE_PING_RUBBER 4.77777 allowed a very stable simulation, and i was able to achieve a 4.9 grind under conditions that I can in other servers. The 4.77777 number is not arbitrary. After trying 3, 4, and 5, I tried 4.5, 4.65, 4.6666, 4.75, 4.77777, and 4.85, although not in that order.

This server is awesome comp!
Almost no lag , sometimes it does just feel like a bad eu server even though my ping is ~400!

Thanks, AI. A good part of the performance, is the very precise adjustment I made to CYCLE_PING_RUBBER.

Just a reminder (hope I'm not intruding, gene-- delete this if it's a problem) that Lightfoot Hosting does offer Australia-based managed Armagetron hosting services. Nobody currently has this service, but it is available under "certain conditions" (which basically means minimum 16-slot). If someone wants to begin service within the next week, however, I'm willing to take the loss of renting an 8-slot Australia server in hopes of more customers once Australian Armagetron takes off a little. ;)

(note that these servers would have basically identical ping as gene's, since a traceroute shows his VPS is in the same datacenter I'd be using)

Glad that you stopped in to remind people. I do not plan to resell hosting. However, it would be nice to see somebody rent an Australian server from Lightfoot hosting, if only to get more Aussie traffic going.!

10 packets transmitted, 0 received, 100% packet loss, time 8999ms
I wonder why I cannot connect to it. I wish i could, would be fin to play with some huge ping for once
