I repeat, with my 2.8.rc2 client I cannot get in.

Use a proper release version, then. There are two types of rcs:
1. Those with no difference to the release version apart from the fact that they consider themselves expired at times.
2. Defective ones.
Neither is prudent to use long after the proper release is out.

Oh, sorry. That's just the config. We had a server crash and I dumped the settings here in case we needed to move to a different server. Thanks for asking.

0.4 z1965 crashed due to an apparent memory leak... It was increasing around 1Mb / minute with about 12 players on the server.

That isn't reproduced here, not a single tiny leak. Maybe it was something one of those players was doing? I obviously can't reproduce 12 real players locally I'd need a serverside recording.

If it helps at all, even a little bit: I rented a VPS for a month in december, and we* hosted 0.4 on it. It crashed about every other hour due to a memory leak that reminds me of this one. I don't have further information but it could be proof that it wasn't just something madmax's server did because it felt like it.

Me & boobert were on top before the crash happened, after the server crash , we just started over.

LOL! I was more than halfway to double digits, too. It was pretty tough I must say. I even tried assigning brakes for the boost. Grinding was pretty difficult.
Thank you to sine and all contributors. It was a fun tournament. I enjoyed the settings and I agree it could be longer.
