Lawlessness on the wiki

Post by Your_mom »

The past couple of days there seems to be an endless supply of idiotic if not just plain old spam edits on the wiki. Way too much for an individual to sift through in a reasonable time frame.

Can anyone devise a plan to deal with this?(aimed mostly at Luci & tank{somewhat at wrtl jonathan and nemo})

Half witted ideas
A. Rollback the wiki several days completly(there have been no actual edits in some time afaik) and block the ip's involved
B. Split up the nonsensical posts for individuals to revert/ban.

I blocked every IP address/account that made an edit with a stupid description recently.

Can Jonathan save us again? Please.

Other solutions still welcome even if Jonathan saves the day again. I still think the amount of spam here could be filtered out or something.

Maybe even something like only members 1 week old may post external links on the wiki. Allows anonymous edits, won't hamper most everyday wiki users. Not sure how you could implement such a system though. Just tossing out ideas.

There's got to be an extension to mediawiki to do that. Whatever wikipedia uses to prevent really new users from defacing articles should work for this.

Tried another strategy, let me know if I messed up.

How about you only let people who are registered on here and have been so for a week or more edit the wiki.

That would require a level of integration between phpBB and mediawiki that we don't currently have, or manual intervention (meaning no new users will ever be able to edit the wiki), and would provide us a "feature" we don't want by forcing users to register here before they can edit the wiki.

cannot we stop registration for a little while, ban the spammers who registered an account and forbid any edit from logged out people?
