If you learn to structure your writing it should be easier to structure a map.

Have a look at this tutorial http://wiki.armagetronad.net/index.php? ... _Beginners. To find it back, use the first link given by Lucifer in this post. On the page displayed are first the very complex map tutorial and second, this much easier one.

Also, read the following discussion http://forums.armagetronad.net/viewtopi ... 501#179501, you will find much information in it.

You can DESIGN your map on paper, I hear graph paper is useful.
You can then MAKE your map using any number of the tools recommended in this post.
Start with simple maps and work your way up.

Alternatively use MSPaint, KolourPaint or some other similar program to design your map. Then you can find out the coordinates of a point by moving the mouse there and looking at the status bar.
Believe it or not, that's how stonehenge came into existance (well, ok, I cheated: The source image came from google, and I used stonehenge's symmetry to my advantage thanks to gvim's keyboard macros).

Yes, the site seems to be down.
I hope it's back soon. I'll be lost without the svg2aamap :(
You can use wrtlprnft's excellent map tranformer to preview and do all sorts of other weird and wonderful things to your map.

Both svg2aamap and the previever can be checked out from SVN. I just don't know how to set up my server for ruby (and i think mod_php and mod_python are enough for that poor old 400MHz box), otherwise i'd host a replacement.

I'll put up the svg2aamap if someone can give me an svg that they know works to use for testing.
