What do you expect from your moderators?

What do you want to see here? Some more categories, forums, and mods? Hmm...

Dunno, but it may have something to do with it having been tainted by one of the alternations.

You certainly know how to pretend, though :)

Anyway, Tank started the 'rules announcement' thread. I posted the rules from earlier here, slightly edited. Change requests and discussions go here, obviously. Personally, I'm in favor of removing 5-8 and replacing them with the simple 'no escalation' rule from above.

Also, I don't know whether we need the 'don't spam' rule. It's not like posts of the type it explicitly covers were ever overabundant and polluted the forums.

I think the most imprtant rule should be:

No insulting, neglecting, or use of any negative adjectives or descriptions of people on this forum or in relation with people on this forum as it can and will be taken as a threat.

Good rule?

If that means jerks who make it hard for you to avoid them get banned?

I say keep it up, if for nothing else but as a prophylactic. There certainly have been strings of that kind of spam, if not necessarily entire threads.

Right, new moderation topic, the character limit per post. Shall we actively do something against the obvious stupid evasions? Single smiley posts filled with... filler? Mind you, single smiley posts are technically against the rules already (rule 3), they just became a lot more annoying because people are made aware of the problem and actively choose to go on anyway.

make this truly like a public forum with true freedom of speech. We are all grown up here so I think we can handle on our own the possibilities of spam and generally annoying speech as one must in their conversations with people on the streets. If someone comes up to you and smiles and that is all they do you can simply ignore them in stead of getting all butt hurt and calling the police to arrest them for senseless spam. I don't think there is any real need for moderators if we all become rule lawyers and learn a more encompassing yet less restrictive rule language. The rules here just plain suck and need a complete re-write. Obviously there is the issue of pornographic images which would fall into the range of public nudity and so would not be accepted in a public forum. Violent language would fall under domestic violence and profanity without a redeeming quality would be considered disorderly conduct and so would also not be appropriate in a public forum. Let spam go, so long as it does not violate the above in being pornographic, violent, or profane. I can walk up the street and hand out all of the advertisement cards I want to and will see resistance from whoever doesn't like what I am doing but I wont get arrested for it. As far as ban evasion goes, it is so easy right now that it would be a joke to really try to perma-ban someone, though it may have worked well in the past; if people want to be on the forum they will be. It is like putting a sleepy guard at your front door to make sure you stay off of the streets. This forum would flourish with the freedom you can give to it. Let it grow into something far more creative and so too will your game. This is a very enjoyable time being a part of a community like this, but it has some very big problems in the range of moderation. Too little moderation and you will lose control of the forum, too much moderation and the forum will suffocate and die. We need a gentle push in the right direction so that the loss of control can be controlled and make for a better community for future members and a better game for future users.

If it gets to be common we'll have to do something about it.

A good post doesn't have to be so many characters long.

A good post can be one word.

There shouldn't be a minimum number of characters in a post for it to be valid.

I agree, we can just post that line where it says it's not enough characters in the post...

It'll make single-smiley-posters think twice. Let's keep it.

I like the minimum character rule. I would even make it larger. But rather than a simple notice saying "you need this many characters" it could be a warning/reminder that your post should be well thought-out, and spamming repeatedly will result in a "time-out." And yes, offenders should get a time-out for trying to get around any rule.

exactly sinewav, it was at 100 (at least for PM's) I felt that was too long, maybe 50 or so would be nice.

It is like a paper.

Your teacher may require a paper to be at least 10 pages long but the subject can be justified exactly and completely in 5 pages. The other 5 pages is just full of bullshit.

This will encourage people to fluff up their posts instead of getting right down to the point.

I don't like it. That's just me.

Yeah, but unfortunately, their second thought is unanimously 'screw it, just spam the error message text'.

There is a clear correlation between really short and useless posts, which is good enough for me. Only apparently it's too hard for many of us to fill a whole twenty-one characters meaningfully. At least show some creativity.
