What it is it going to take to make a .4 stable release?

What do you want to see in Armagetron soon? Any new feature ideas? Let's ponder these ground breaking ideas...

What it is it going to take to make a .4 stable release?

Post by compguygene »

First of all, for those of you who seem to think that no development has been happening on Armagetron, I refer you to this page on Launchpad where development has been happening as recently as 10/31/2014. Contributions in terms of needed bugfixes to .4 to make it more stable. Recent contributors include Z-man, DLH, and epsy. So, even though you have seen no new builds for a while, there is plenty of new code. I noticed this when I installed new OS on my computer. I always build Armagetron from source, and I noticed that the branch that I have pointed you to has become the working branch, and that there are no new builds based on that branch. I may make some so others can try the updates.
The real point of this topic is to try to get the information from the current active developers that is needed for others to contribute in a way that is the most meaningful. Specifically, as Jip asked, what needs to be done to finish .4?
Is .4 feature-frozen?
Are there specific bug fixes that are a high priority that you need to have others work on now?
I have a few other potential developers that are interested in the game, and this additional information would really help me to give them something to dive into, if I can get them interested in working on the project.

Ive used it, and frankly, it feels shaky as balls compared to the previous releases. I think youll have a hard time getting old players on board. If you make it the default download like you did the last coupla times you forced us to use a crappier version of tron, im sure itll eventually catch on. But as a player, I hope you guys dont.

The rubber only got worse, the forcing vsync only makes a divide between people who can and cant, the minimap is complete useless. Theres a few other things as well, but those are the most grevious.

Not sure what that actually means as far as the client goes.

Uhm, it's not forced. There's an option to toggle it.

Take it off, or get a cockpit that toggles the minimap? Same goes with the clock.

there isnt, they removed the vsync toggle a while ago. I have to force it off with video drivers now.

Go look at your options with any new tron, its gone. Been gone for a while too.

I've been on z2069 for quite a while. Maybe I should check out the launchpad version.

I am using the latest version of .4 built from the launchpad branch I directed everyone to at the beginning of this topic. I just checked and Vsync can be toggled between "Default", "Don't wait", "Motion Blur", and "Wait".

That's what I got on z2069. So, I guess my post stands.

Yep, at least the last time I checked on linux. Windows only seems to have "Wait" (on), "Don't wait" (off) and "Default".

Yeah, it's still there. I can't speak for Windows though.

Updated zones documentation. :)

I was looking at the wiki, but it hasn't been changed (unless a new page was created for new zones documentation, which would be weird).

I guess I'll have to dig in the code to figure out what's been implemented. :/

That would be really appreciated. I was playing with zonesV2 a little and when I realized that the current wiki docs are just a copy of the original forum thread and that a lot of development has taken place since.
A few new, really kewl servers that require .4 clients to play in because of features like zonesV2 might help push adoption of the new client.

I still hate the new cockpit concept, and the requirements for editing it.
