ping charity setting to play on my own server

Post by wallpaper »

I have 2 IP addresses from my ISP with 2 computers connected through a hub.

I installed a dedicated server on one of them, and I sometimes connect and play from the other computer.

My ping is (as expected) quite a bit lower than other users that connect.

Can I set the ping charity to more than 300 when I play or should I simply stay off of my server? I would like to play, but I don't want to make the game less enjoyable for others that connect.

Yes, you can set your ping charity to something higher through the console. To assign a key to the console, go to System Setup -> Misc -> Global Key Commands. The command is ping_charity.

Wow!!! Fast response...thanks.

What would be the highest number I can use before it doesn't do anything? Or should I just experiment until I get an even ping?

Thanks again for the fast response.

The ping that is displayed when you hit "TAB" is always your real ping, the charity has not been added/subtracted. The maximum sensible ping charity is the maximum ping of players you expect to connect divided by two.

YEs, i've been trying to find a way to slow down my connection somehow, I know it sounds stupid, but i've found a use for a slow connection. It would take that darn advantage away when you play on your locally. I havent found an app. as of yet but i'm working on it. There just doesn't seem to be much call for retarding an interenet connection. :o :(

Use iptables to route the packets around through a shell script or something? :)

hmm, yes I was hoping for something a bit less messy, and with a little more control so I can raise and lower the ping quickly, and turn it off quickly too. :| plus, i'm not sure I could time that right, were talking about nano seconds right? :o
