Honestly, if you only want one server, you might be best off to rent a server from http://hosting.rxtron.com/servers.php. For the $4 a month you will have a decent server that all the technical stuff will be taken care off for you. They will also help you get going with some more support than you will get here.
He won't go that route. He says he has no money to spend on it, which would probably be due to the fact he's very young. I had given him two servers in the past and he fails to follow any instruction / rules in place. He managed to muck up his server multiple times and break my single rule ... of not changing the server port over and over again. He sets up servers by trying to copy and paste, and overwrites settings needed to make everything run properly. I couldn't even see it being worth the $4/mo. lol
Anyways, he seems to just be trying to set things up with free services while having no idea what he's actually doing. I'm not even sure what his goals are, or why he wants all of it, but he's not an easy one to deal with so good luck trying.
compguygene wrote:Thanks for the FYI, Light. I am officially done. Free services just don't cut it.
Eh .. they could. Find a free web host you can get a free domain linked to. There would be auths and forums in one. Being that there will be little to no traffic, home hosting is also an option with a computer being left on. Servers will take something a little better, but a few have had them running on free servers in the past with what sounded like somewhat of a success. I think someone posted about using Amazon or something, and there were others.
His problem is more not knowing what he's doing, and not understanding the help he's given. Maybe if someone spoke his primary language he'd get some help, but yeah I guess we get the same result. Nothing more to really help him with.
Yeah, I actually have run servers on Amazon in the past which gives you service for a year. Of course the problem with cloud servers is that when they are being moved in the cloud, they get real laggy. That's why I don't do cloud servers anymore, even if free. They always do that in the middle of a tournament or really fun match!

lol They just like to remind you that you're being a cheap-o. On the other hand, some may find it better than paying for the services. Of course, that would require you knowing how to set it all up. I don't know what OS you're given with them, but I've only automated Debian and don't plan on doing others.

I had problems with him (jason) trying to put settings in autoexec.cfg when they are supposed to go into settings_custom.cfg... I had no problem with Durf since he actually knew wth he was doing. Although, my hosting ended up being too laggy for him (durf) in the end.

My issue with him isn't that he didn't understand or did something wrong. My issue is that no matter how detailed I explained things to him, he couldn't understand well enough to follow any sort of instruction. I fixed his problems multiple times and eventually gave warnings before removing him.
He took the route of saying he was hacked, that "his brother" did it, and other things. Yeah .. someone hacked him and tried to copy and paste the same shit he did. That's pretty amazing that they meant no harm and were as dim as him. /sigh
Running an Armagetron server does have a pretty steep learning curve. Even with detailed instructions, there is a lot to learn for a true noob. If someone is not really willing to put in the effort they will never really be able to do this.

My hosting sets up each server completely. All they have to do is add the settings for rubber and whatnot. He kept removing my settings (where I have a comment saying not to) and changing things he didn't know what they were for, such as DNS and port. I think as long as I'm explaining to him in English, it's gonna be a failed battle. It's all I can do though.
I just eventually hit the top of what I wanna put up with to host someone's server. I don't charge, I don't require anything other than you tell me you still want it for another month when it's near ending, and I don't benefit from it. I just do it to be nice and I don't have a lot of time to spare lately.
A source has said that jas0n is actually just swag pretending to be some random person that can't speak english well, no idea if this actually true or not, so take it with a grain of salt, but the possibility is there.
According to some people in the game, Swag seems to be an omnipresent, omniscient presence with unlimited hacking abilities. Oh, and if you have any doubts about the identity of anybody, they are Swag.

lol Kind of sad how true that is. Jason is not Swag.
