How did you get started in Armagetron
Re: How did you get started in Armagetron
like Zombie strategy games or electric sheep?
Re: How did you get started in Armagetron
I found it after seeing a picture of "Tron Guy". I was oddly curious about the guy so I was reading about him and his custome and eventually I found a link to the game. I got started playing Breakfast in Hell and Breakfast of champions. I met up with Lucifer and he helped me get started with hosting and I launched Swampland for a couple of years, and Shrunkland for a couple as well. Now I don't host either
I want to also mention that Phytotron worked hard to perfect the Shrunkland settings after I got that server running. Thanks Phytotron!

I walked into the computer room, found my bro playing it, and asked if I could play.

Ok, but why did I add this signature? I was like 15 and thought I was smart? What a brat.

Found the link on some forums. Installed it. Played 3 months on standard map with bots. Discovered "Internet game" option. Yeah, that's how it started I guess

Found my co-worker playing and trying to hide it from me. I then started playing and learned the function of the "s" button....compguygene wrote:I agree, I told my story in this thread. http://forums3.armagetronad.net/viewtop ... 4&start=15 Let's hear your story!Cosmic Dolphin said: We should have a forum devoted to players telling how they got started in Armagetron. Re: How did you get started in Armagetron
Alright, I'll play. Once upon a time I had an old version of Armagetron. It would've been 0.2.6.0 at the latest, but possibly earlier. No recollection where I found it online. I think I might've got GLTron around the same time. Don't think I would've or could've played it on my Performa (was there ever a version for OS 8.5?), so probably didn't get it until after I got the G3 iMac, which was late 2002, so sometime thereafter. At any rate, played it locally some; don't recall what I thought of it, but probably preferred GLTron. I have a vague recollection of going online once—this is when I still had dialup—and having severe lag, but not knowing what lag was at the time; just getting all kinds of messed up warping and jumping. "What the hell is going on?" Got some response, don't recall exactly, didn't try online again.
Then sometime in 2004 I got cable broadband. Went into my "Games" folder and looked for any that had online play. There was that old version of Armagetron. Don't recall if I located and downloaded a more recent version; might've. Loaded it up, went online, went into Tiger's something-or-another, I think. "Hey, where's the little box in the bottom-left corner that shows the overhead view?" ... "LOL! WTF r u talkin about?" (Actually, the language probably wasn't that bad; weren't as many doopid kids playing then.) Har, I was confusing it with GLTron. Anyway, got beat up a bunch. Some guy says, "you gotta keep your speed up." Saw him passing between walls and shit; another new player and I both thought he was cheating. "That kind of thing shouldn't happen!" (Funny how views can come full circle.)
So on and so forth, played here and there. Fonkay was the first "Tron buddy" I made. At that time she was called 'Funk Standard', and I was called...hmm, I don't remember. Lady? I know 'Giacomo' was one for a little while, because that's where 'Gina' came from. But wasn't there another regular name I used? Hrm. And then there was 'Audrey'.
Then I found this forum and thought the custom avatars were neat, so I settled on a new, semi-permanent playername and made my own:
<snip>
Then I started making all kinds of textures and stuff, though didn't post most.
Then I helped make Shrunkland. (Still want to further tweak it! Heh.)
Then everything got broken by maps, multiple axes, zones and gimmicky game modes, shite-for-brains irritating kids, and last but not least, "play open, gay noob closer!" That last one is the worst thing to happen to this game since its inception.
I guess that's sort of a multi-parter of beginnings, actually.
