Yes, and that is because your screen name is just that: your current screen name. A nickname. There are bound to be collisions between nicknames (we have three Lucifers, I think, and several Vipers, and really there is nothing wrong with that), we have people changing nicknames all of the time just for fun. A nickname is not an identity, and nobody should have the right to permanently and globally forbid others from using certain nicknames. Armathentication, however, gives you an ID. That ID is unique to you, and people can check it. Your ID can hold reliable information, like what clan you are in or what your favorite food is. IDs have a certain format and can't be used for 'artistic' expressions so well.
Incidentally, that's exactly how steam games handle it. You have your steam ID, which is unique, and has certain restrictions (no special characters and stuff). And you have your screen name, which is not unique and can have more liberal formatting.
