hmmm
got redirected here by nemo
and it is a little thin on the ground...
we have a new beta coming up
and it seems to me
that we can show the big commercial corporate types
how to do it in style
games cost a lot of money
and for that reason i don't play many games
however
this game
is
ammmmmmmmmmmmmmaaaaaaaaaaazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzing
as i am sure you would agree
you guys are not big on compliments
you'd rather just and and and
rather than go into any detail
so i would like to suggest
that we show our appreciation in the regular way in society
and put some money up
if a film costs £5
cd's cost £8
i think this game is worth more
so
which donate button can i click on?
and where does the money go?
[
keep it simple please

read the thread, and youäll find out that
click on the paypal button on any armagetron site. the money goes straight to tank program, our cool forums/main site admin who will use it to carry the cost of running this site. If the need arises, it will probably also go to lucifer, our wiki admin. And I don't know what will happen when huge amounts of money flow

well...
start thinking...Walking Tree wrote:And I don't know what will happen when huge amounts of money flow
before some arse comes along and buys things out
and before you know it
armagetron is just like everything else
i am a social scientist in my spare time
(
when i am not on the grid
)
and you might want to think about the impact of sports on society
either the olympic games with the ancient greeks
and football in our modern world...
the revenue, the marketing, the media, the social impact
that's the kind of thing which is happening with computer games generally
as you know of course...
the problem is
it is all going down the same track of commercialism
there are alternatives
as demonstrated by the the designers and developers and players here
someone has to start thinking about it

Any donate button on the forums, the main site, or at sourceforge.net. It goes to me for paying for the domain name.2020 wrote:which donate button can i click on?

yes
@tree:
of course i have
but i haven't thought about it regarding armagetron
and wondered how people here have thought about how the game might develop
and if it does
and it becomes successful
how this might manifest as moneyflow
!
not that anyone here is motivated by money
we are all amateurs
doing it for the love of it
as far as i can understand
i like the idea of directing money for what i have experienced to be
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrreat

To stray off topic a little -
What happens if an open source game is bought out bycorporate types? Do the old versions remain in the public domain?
If so why would anyone buy it? some guy would just create a fork of the old version to incorporate the new features of the comercial version.
Or something.

THe old versions retain their copyright protection as they always did, and they remain under the license they were.
An example. The sourceforge.net software was once open source. It was GPL. Somewhere right before the 3.0 release, VA Linux decided to close up the source. There were public cvs servers, and a number of people went and grabbed the last publicly available code that was still GPL.
Now we have Savane and gForge, where gForge is actually run by the guy that wrote the software for VA Linux. He got mad at VA Linux for closing up the source, quit, and started his own company. gForge powers a number of useful sites, like postgresql, mamboforge, and others.
Savane powers GNU Savannah, which hosts many open source projects.
So, yeah, if someone comes along and buys out all the developers today and closes up the source code for AA, you guys can grab what is in cvs right now and fork it and still be legal.
Note: Open source is *not* public domain. Open source software still has copyright protection for all who have contributed, but public domain does not.
