Haha, that's great! Do you have a specific career path you're planning to take? Have you looked into anything in particular? I've never met anyone with an archaeology (or philology) degree

There are excavation companies that usually don't offer a very good salary unless you're a specialist (e.g. for underwater archaeology or 3d reconstruction stuff) - so, if I have to nourish a family one day, it's probably wiser to make a PhD before I get 30 years old, then one can become a professor at a university relatively fast (in Germany at least). People who make their PhD past that age have very low chances of getting a fair payment even though they're just as qualified. Now I have 7 years left, we'll see how that turns out...
As for other career opportunities, some just write a lot of books, or a single popular one, or work in a museum/on excavations their whole life and slowly climb up in the hierarchy - anything that has to do with tourism. There's also "reenactment scene"; for example internet-based shops which sell (often completely unscientific) replicas, e.g. gladiator, orgy equipment or any product whose design hints at classical antiquity (not my cup of tea to be honest...)

Currently I'm really interested if there's a way to make a difference in the illegal trade of pieces that IS has looted in Syria to finance themselves. And a few lucky people work as advisors for the movie industry.
What I love about the subject is how many different facets it has; you can specialize in things like architecture/biology/anthropology or numismatics for example. Some people found out I'm good at drawing; now I helped someone with their catalogue of find drawings and in return my name is mentioned in a publication. That makes it a little easier to set foot, I hope.

That's very cool! I had assumed as much (regarding the difficulty of feeding a family). Archaeology seems like one of those things that people take for granted. Which, subsequently, means people don't think it's as important as it really is, leading to less funding. You could always resort back to the whole "never working a day in your life" mentality, though. Surely archaeology is a very fun field

Is your potential significant other in Archaeology as well? If you can find you a woman with money it'd probably be easier to pursue your dreams more comfortably

Nope, she's more into politics and law (the idealist/selfless kind that doesn't care about money)

So was I for a long time though, but unlike her I had a teacher who spoiled it for me (and that was before the NSA scandal).

yay FPGAs! From what I see my stuff is a bit more IT oriented than yours and you may have a bit more pure maths. Have you had Fourier/Laplace stuff (yet)?

I'm not very good at politics. It's kind of annoying because I'd like to be "in the know" but I'm also not devoted enough to set aside time to read more into it. I think the hardest part of becoming politics-oriented is seeing through all the media bullshit. It's hard to get an accurate idea of what the government actually looks like because you only hear what the media wants you to hear. (unless you find the right sources, which I haven't). I guess I'm that kind of American that everyone shuns for not knowing a lick about politics. Meh.

also, just realized I might've hijacked this thread from its intended purposes (I only finished reading "spam-ish forum" before posting). SO, to answer, my day was good, I have also been working/am working on papers (deleted tron so I wouldn't be distracted then I re-downloaded it after 1 day, gj), annnnnd yeah. good luck y'all with finals!

I guess I owe you some status update too

I had to hand over my bachelor thesis today and feel quite relieved now. And tired. Last night LibreOffice crashed after I spent hours to write a good introduction that I forgot to save, so I had to rewrite that in about 10 minutes. I guess now 39 of 40 pages of text are relatively well written but the introduction just plain sucks compared to the rest and if I don't get a good mark, it is solely because of that.

So perhaps you see me on the grid a little more again.

I hate to be that guy, but fpgas and incremental fossil evidence, not so much of a revolution.

You guys should either get very good at your jobs, or look for other ones.
