New server, setting suggestions

Post by :Brad »

Hi all, really appreciate the effort of all who have helped provide this game. :D

I have been playing for a while now and love the game, however, playing from australia there are no servers. Lag is always a problem. :(

Being in australia, what server settings would allow for best play for those coming from overseas? :?

Are there any settings people could suggest?

Also, trying to get my service provider "Exetel" to host a server, please see the "Other Games" section at this URL http://games.exetel.com.au/forum/
and add comments to support this push, might get a server installed with heaps of bandwidth. :D

Basically higher then average rubber. Something in the area of 5 or 6, to counter act the lag. That's all that comes to mind right now. Also maybe a slightly slower speed, so you have more reaction time.

goshdarn settings are always a nice choice. and the winzone should be changed to deathzone, naturally. :)

there's a couple threads that have them, i think. here's one with perhaps an abbreviated list:

http://guru3.sytes.net/viewtopic.php?t= ... n+settings

i also agree with the high rubber!

OK i pasted these settings to settings.cfg

brad, i'm a little confused because i was only able to connect just now by custom connect to your IP. when i browsed the internet list of servers from top to bottom i couldn't find yours. and this is strange because the other day your server showed up just fine. possibly you changed the "broadcast to master server" setting from 1 to 0 or something.

and on a totally unrelated note, i see another aussie server called "games.secret.com.au" .... AU stands for oz, not austria, right?

no its set the same
---cut---
TALK_TO_MASTER 1 # set this to 1 if you want this server to be known
# on the internet

DEDICATED_IDLE 2 # if you run a dedicated server and set this
--paste---

There is one extra file that is important

and that is var/user.cfg

this file is created the first time you run armagetron.
IT has a lot of setting that is loaded when armagetron is loaded including:
CLIENT_PORT 4534
SERVER_PORT 4534
SERVER_NAME Unnamed Server

SERVER_NAME is the most important, there is such a name in dedicated_Server.cfg (or elsewhere doesnt matter where for now) but the upshot is that armagetron will ignore SERVER_NAME from any other file if it is set in user.cfg to something else. ( i think it was this way around :)

Ie make sure that SERVER_NAME is correct in ALL files to make sure.

Be sure to set DEDICATED_IDLE to 0 or it will shut down after 2 hours if no one has played on it...

I'm too trying to set up a server.
However there is no user.cfg in the /var dir

If someone could post a sample cfg file that I could edit, that would be very much appriciated. 8)

aswell as any command line options that you suggest.

Btw, the server will be running on a 10mb connection, pumped through an oc48.
So any ideas on the best server settings for this configuration would be great.

cheers
