I want to run a SPECIAL EVENTS server, Need Help.

Post by Seeker »

I am looking for some help in setting up a dedicated server on Win XP pro, connected through standard verizon DSL service. My firewall is already set up to host the games, so thats not a problem.

MY IDEA

I need a few things:
1) should I use my standard client or dedicated server (TPR?)

2) I may need some help setting it up for scoring and settings. If anyone could email me the settings for an established server so i could have a template to work with.

3) are there ANY OTHER problems I may encounter, that I should look into?[/url]

Right, so you've got port 4534 forwarded? Great. Now, just doulbe-click armagetron-dedicated and you'll have the standard server config running :D. Wasn't that easy? Now type quit in the console because the standard config sucks. (Not too much though.) Go into the config and modify SERVER_NAME in default.cfg, that's all in that file. No open settings.cfg and setting_dedicated.cfg. All the config options are very well documented in there, so then if you have any problems, let us (me) know. As for TPR or regular? It's up to you. TPR is 0.2.6.0 with bugfixes, ie, the console displays chat messages, so once again it's up to you.

After running my server for almost 24 hours without my firewall, I am happy with the performance. The next test will happen in a few days, this time from behind my firewall. I would appreciate feedback from people who play the next test session, on any problems they encounter.

prey.....it seems that the average ping in my server is no higher than i experience elsewhere ( 100-180) when i log in from an outside client/computer. i dont know if you mean you hit that ping inside my server, or thats the report ping from the master server in the server browser. let me know which.

I found the server last night (and the game too). Ping was @ 100 from Chicago area DSL. Seeker was an amecible host and even took the time to show me some of the ropes and pointed me to these forums (but your link was for 'gurua', not 'guru3' ).

Heyas, Eft.

Welcome to the forum and one of the most insidious, addictive games ever! Heh.
Practice, ignore any bs that comes your way, practice some more... and don't forget to eat. As you have seen there are a lot of servers, all with their own "feel". I look forward to seeing you around on Armagoshdarn, where I play. It's not for the feint of heart, but you will quickly polish your skills there! There are, of course, several other good servers around... check 'em out and have fun. =)

Thanks for the welcome. So far it's been a great game and community. I've almost wept a few times at how cool this is.
As an intro:
Eft is my username (Everyone's Friend Tim) , 37 is the gaming group I'm in (http://www.the37.com). We all met playing Bungie's Myth 2, but are now hooked on Halo, but I figured we needed something more.
The picture is actually me photoshoped by an ordermate, as I was accused of being ringleader of an alien mind-control cult in our Politics forum.
I look forward to riding with you all and having great times ahead.
I work at a record store and do electronic music for a hobby.
I run OS X on a Powerbook G4 that I saved 2 years to get.

Just a message for those who were on my server last night:

It wasn't a game problem that forced the server shutdown, I had a CPU cooling fan issue. The fan was old and stopped working causing a spike in temps. I replaced it, and now all is well.

Seeker's U.T.S. will be up all weekend with a new set of rules. For more info, EMAIL OR PM ME!

Heh. Just don't let them get the best of you. They're vicious, and once have ahold of your hand will not let go.
