dedicated server help

Post by lege »

i know i have asked before how to make a dedicated server, so i gave up for a while because it did not work. so i just tried just now and typed the code: sudo apt-get install armagetron dedicated and then typed my password and this came up :
lege@lege-laptop:~$ sudo apt-get install armagetronad-dedicated
[sudo] password for lege:
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
armagetronad-dedicated is already the newest version.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 282 not upgraded.

then i typed in the code: armagetronad-dedicated and this came up :
lege@lege-laptop:~$ armagetronad-dedicated
/usr/games/armagetronad-dedicated: line 27: /var/games/armagetronad/armagetronad-dedicated-starter.pid: Permission denied

so then i read on another forum that Z-MAN helped on and i typed in the code given to the person : sudo /etc/init.d/armagetronad-dedicated and this and this came up :
Not starting Armagetron Advanced dedicated server armagetronad-dedicated, disabled via /etc/default/armagetronad-dedicated
so then i followed the other forum and typed sudo /usr/games/armagetronad-dedicated and this came up :
lege@lege-laptop:~$ sudo /usr/games/armagetronad-dedicated
[0] Bound socket to *.*.*.*:44135.
[0] Bound socket to *.*.*.*:4534.
[0] Setting CYCLE_BRAKE_REFILL (Group: Annoying) deviates from its default value; clients older than 0.2.5.0 may experience problems.
[0] Ping charity changed from 100 to 100100.

[0] Timestamp: 2010/05/01 20:11:15
[0] Closing socket bound to *.*.*.*:4534
[0] Bound socket to *.*.*.*:4534.

but then there is a blank afterwards, where i cannot type anything into the terminal because it doesnt have lege@lege-laptop:~$ anymore, what do i do then?

Just because there is no prompt doesn't mean you cannot type.

Yep. It's not permanent, though. Permanent changes need to be entered into the configuration files in /etc/armagetronad-dedicated.

Well, yes. But the talk_to_master setting will only take effect if you join your server over the LAN, then leave it again.

At first, yes. But once you entered TALK_TO_MASTER 1 into the console, joined over the LAN and left, it will make itself known to the master servers.

Yes.
Yes, if you also set up port forwarding correctly.
So you can see the server's output and enter commands.

Ok so when i setup everything and did the TALK_TO_MASTER 1 command and i left (meaning i hit esc and went to end the server) i didn't see it on the master server list. So i went back to it and did the command again and then opened another Armagetron and tried to find it but neither the name or the IP address shows on the master server list. and when i type in the terminal sudo /etc/init.d/armagetronad-dedicated start it wont allow me to start it.

Then paste the server logs and tell us your global IP so we can check the master logs.

No need to do that via PM, the purpose of the master servers is to get your IP published :) If you're scared someone may attack you by knowing your IP, then don't host a server.

Anyway, the server made itself known to the master several times, so TALK_TO_MASTER is working. Contacting the server then failed, however, so you don't have your port forwarding set up correctly.
