I'd say it's okay to use groups of words that have taken on a distinct identity.

The correct order is up, side, down, side, up, side, down, side and so on. So, somebody should post something going sideways!!!!!

I didn't think there was a predetermined pattern, I thought it was just supposed to be whether the associating word was up, down, or sideways. Made this crappy web to show you how I mean. (couldn't think of an up for valve).
