Fortress Brawl

Post by SageLord »

For those of you that don't know, I've been sort of thinking about a new sort of fortress tournament. I'm pretty much copy pasting this from my post from the Twisted Rats forums, but I wanted to get a feel for how the tron fortress community feel about a tournament like this.

A recap:

----------
Fortress Brawl is a tournament that anyone can sign up for that will be played over the course of a few weeks in a league-style format.
The teams will be chosen in a team captain style format. Players will sign up and get thrown into a player list. Designated team captains will choose from the player base.

When signing up, players should give their tron alias, e-mail address (for contact), what position they would prefer to play, with their secondary position preference, so that team captains can have some idea of how their team will look.

The sign ups will take place on the Twisted Rats forums.

The team captains will be chosen by a discussion with a few prominent tron members. If they don't want to be a captain, they can decline. This changed from my original idea for people to say whether they want to be a team captain or not. In this way, hopefully we can get some really good team captains. The team captains will be asked after the sign-ups close. The team captains will need to be experienced and need to know all the key points of fortress.

Once team captains are chosen, they will all meet up sometime, probably on a private IRC channel to choose teams. Once teams are chosen, the players will be randomly listed under each team so that players will not know when they were chosen.

Also, after sign-ups close, the tournament will not begin immediately. This gives teams the chance to organize some strategies and get to know how everyone on their team plays.

The players per team will depend on how many people sign up and how many team captains we can get. It will probably be somewhere between 4 and 8, but it could vary depending on how many team captains we can find. Pros of a smaller team, easier to organize. Pros of a larger team, more fun. :P

There will be alternates for each team. The only difference, is that every player that shows up to a match will HAVE to play at least one match. This will prevent older players from stopping newer players from playing in the matches. This also creates a sort of mindset of, "you are only as good as your worst player". The point of this tournament is to pass wisdom to newer players, help them out, teach them how to play fortress well.
----------

The Fortress Brawl will be a friendly tournament, and should be conducted as such. The idea behind this tournament is to encourage newer players to play fortress and learn more about it. This hopefully will expand our fortress player base and allow for many more teams for future fortress competitions.

There will probably be a 2 week sign up period and then another 2 or 3 week practice period before actual matches start.

Things to think about...
When to play these matches? Saturday, Sunday? We for sure don't want this to interfere with the VIP and the Ladle.
Does anyone forsee any problems concerning this tournament?
Any other rules that need to be added?

As always, any feedback is welcome. Any questions are also welcome, and I'll try to answer them as soon as possible.

*EDIT*
If matches happen to coincide with another big event, such as ladle or TST, then we will postpone matches from that week to the next.

----

If you don't have any comments, but you'd be interested in a tournament like this, could you please make a post saying you're interested. I'm trying to see how many people would go for this idea.

So we can play it on the wii?

It sounds like a great idea. I'll probably sign up if it gets off the ground.

Team captains, eh? I'll probably get picked last. I'm "the fat kid" in fortress. :?

No seriously, I love the idea. I love fortress. And...I...I love all of you guys. *sniffs*

Im just afraid that captains will just pick members from their clans if they're in one and it will just be another tourney. Personally i see the upside of this as i get to play with people i normally play against in an organized tourney, not just another option to play with my team.

to make fair teams why not have some sort of rating system. Say when you sign up you rate yourself 1-5, 1 being newb 5 being vet. This would make for more balanced teams

Well, generally people will pick the better players first and they are spread across all clans. I guess it is possible that a team will be made up of just players from one clan, but it's not likely. Plus there may be more than one team captain from a clan, or NO team captain from a clan. It all just depends on who signs up and who is willing to do it. Plus, even if a team is all from one clan, it'll create some interesting competition. It'd be fun to see another team put together a massive force to beat a team that's played together for a while. :)

The problem with this is that people would rate themselves differently. Ideally, there could be a committee that would rate everyone in the player base and the players could be divided up like this. Maybe we could try that for another tournament, but I think that would be harder to organize. There would also be a lot of discrepancies with that way... The process of fairly rating and splitting players would take a while, I'm sure. With team captains, all the players would get picked relatively fast.

------------

UPDATE!!!

The tournament will be scheduled for January 18th! The sign ups will open tonight or tomorrow on http://twisted-rats.co.cc/forum/! The tournament will be played with ladle 17 settings. If you have any comments or concerns, now would be the time to bring them up!

And then my entire school district banned it because a kid got
hit in the face and complained to his mom.
