European League: Fortress

Post by Titanoboa »

This idea has been itching my brain for a while and I think it's a shame that our fortress community doesn't have a working league system.
I am aware that there has been attempts (e.g. AFL) in the past. Any similarities/differences between this system and the previous ones are coincidental, as this isn't based on any previous armagetron event. With that said, let's not focus on what has happened/hasn't worked and let's focus on what will happen.

Basic information about the league:
  • » Divisions of 8 teams each:
    - » Elite division, Division 1, Division 2 etc..
» 2 matches every month, both played on the 3rd Sunday of the month.*
» All teams play eachother twice every season.
» 6v6 Fortress, server settings will be close to the ladle settings.
» Matches will use limit_time 30, unlimited score. (Each meet is 'best of 1')
    » IMPORTANT: Match scores (e.g. 166-135, 159-151) will be divided by 10 and rounded down. (--> 16-13, 15-15)
» 3 points for win, 1 point for draw, 0 points for loss. No-show results in a 0-20 loss.
» Not clan-based. Team managers can sign up and register players for their team.
    - » Minimum registered players to participate: 6.
    - » Maximum registered players to participate: undecided.
» Min. players in a match: 4 (any less counts as no-show/forfeit)
» Max. amount of subs to bring: undecided
» Max. 3 substitutes per match. Players that are switched out can't be switched back in.
» One season a year. 7 Sundays (7 months) per season. Probably Feb-May and Aug-Oct, or something like that. Undecided atm.
* If we ever do get more than one division, for example Division 1 matches might be played on the 2nd Sunday, which means we can use the same set of servers for both divisions.

While successful fort tournaments are mostly community driven/"self organized", this league will be organized and run either by me alone or a small group of people.
The league rules will be kept simple and strict to minimize misunderstandings and pointless arguments.

Oh and by now you're probably wondering why it's called European League.
Non-Euro players will be allowed to play in this league, but the matches will all be played in European servers on times that suit European players. (For example 17:00 and 18:30 GMT. Undecided atm.)
This is because I don't want to let the time zone issue ruin this good idea.
If there's enough interest from American players, I personally hope there will be a similar league for them too. (In cooperation with the Euro league of course.)

Of course, this can only happen if there is interest from the players, to play in such a league. Basically, I'm offering to do the organizing part if you do the playing part ;)
If you're interested in being a team manager (which means you will register your team and players, and then manage your team), please show your interest by posting in this thread. Showing interest in this thread doesn't mean you're registered as a team manager, but it'll let me know if it's worth investing time in making this happen.

What we need to make this happen:
- A good website (I will start working on one as soon as you've shown interest)
- At least 6 servers (4 main match-servers, at least two backups)
- At least 6 registered teams

If there are more than 8 teams registered for the first season of this league, there will be qualifications during the pre-season period (November-January). Most likely scenario if this should happen: The top 8 teams form the Elite division. The rest of the teams, if enough, form a Div 1.
I doubt we'll get more than 8 teams directly, but it would be cool if we did.

Cheers,

Here's the current status:

[ ] Good website

[x] Match server 1 (G5's)
[x] Match server 2 (Z-man's)
[x] Match server 3 (PRU)
[ ] Match server 4
[x] Backup server 1 (G5's)
[/] Backup server 2 (uNk)?

[2] Interest from atleast 6 Team Managers
[0] At least 6 registered teams*

*Requires the website, obviously

I wonder if we should take server location into consideration.. I don't think it's really necessary as long as it's a good Euro server. Right?

Oh and, there will be a pre-season (how many matches is yet undecided) no matter what, as a final test for server settings and whatnot. Details on these pre-season matches will come later.

Thats so damn weird. I just came to this forums to post a topic about a league.

I was going to do it slightly differently:

Every week there is one match for each team. Teams can be teams or clans. Teams decide on how many people they bring: 4v4, 5v5 and 6v6 are all allowed. Any less is a loss.

One match per week for each team (unless theres an odd number of teams, in which case one team would not be playing), at a set time (so all the teams would be playing at once).

Basically, my rules are a bit looser in some respects, since you only have to play one match on each participating day, first to 100 (or was thinking play 3 matches, league points = how many matches you win), can be less players (and fairer when there are), but teams would have to play every week.

Either way, I am definately interested, as either a clan or a team member

Sounds cool - I think you guys should consider making a contemporary version of this:
http://forums3.armagetronad.net/viewtop ... f=2&t=4361 // http://z3.invisionfree.com/armagetronleaders
to include clans and teams, of course.

Then, make this league thing a branch off of that. Just a thought.

Ha ha, havn't you been playing fm recently; I wonder where this came from
I like the idea of a league but it will never happen as it drags out and people lose interest. Furthermore for it to be sustainable the teams would have to be flexible (some players play for different teams all the time, join a clan, have arguements & fall out etc.) but I don't see how a league can accommodate this and still be credible/fair
I don't think I'd be sold on divisions, lower skilled players should be mixing with higher skilled to improve. Though I doubt there's enough players for any more than 2 divisions
Also the AFL's seemed to run a lot better than Concords' FPL, maybe this is an arguement against self organisation when it comes to a league

The concept sounds great...
I'd love to see this work out.. But if there is enough attention and the chance to create another league is available, i would ask you call it the "North American League" rather than "The American League" , just as it is called European League, not the "British League" or "Italian League"

Thats just a suggestion, because i am a Canadian player and if you call it the American League, I lose interest and then some other Canadian player will go out and create a "Canadian League" and then so on...

Thanks!

othx Z-man!

Just wondering that if there was this league, who of you would want to be a team leader/manager?

For example the usual: Concord, Gonzap, Flex, Olive, Word ? (Who am i forgetting)

There's enough players for atleast 6 full teams if there's enough leaders to assemble them..

I rather play than captain, but if you're short on captains you know where to reach me.
