Skin your cycle/trail?
Market research here... would you pay $5-$10 per year to have a custom skinned cycle? $5 would get you "in the door", and artists would be able to charge on top of that to use their designs. "In the door" funds would be treated as project donations, to cover costs, and (hopefully) fund some development. Probably some kind of "bulk rate" for clans using the same skin...
Note: Skins might be limited (or filtered) to greyscale so team-play can still force colours.
Note 2: Contributors would get skinning (base only) at a discount or free of charge, depending on contribution.
Note 3: Obviously we would audit/censor skins (nothing obscene).

by 'skin' do you mean the 3d model or the textures?
I don't understand the concept yet i suppose...

I'm not sure if I'd be upset or not. I find it really hard to believe it could ever happen.

Re: Skin your cycle/trail?
ok, i'll just try to think aloud.
So we just create our own cycles and add them to a central database and some people pay for it and support the development. Are you going to start clan groups on this forum, like in tr2n so you get your custom cycle as soon as you login?

See it as a reward for donating. You donate some to the dev team, you get to show off. But I totally can't see it working. How would you enforce it in a project like this? Besides people thinking their lack of salary while playing costs them enough.

Just an idea of how to use a useless feature to raise development funds.Word wrote:why would we have to pay for it...
But you'd need to modify the code and get everyone to run your version.Word wrote:i mean we could just create our own cycles and add them to a central database.
There's already per-server sub-forums here... anyhow, I mean the cycle/trail you actually see in the game, not just some forum avatar.Word wrote:Are you going to start clan groups on this forum, like in tr2n so you get your custom cycle as soon as you login?
As far as the "how", the implementation would need to be having every client download a list of GID-to-skin mappings from a project server. This leaves the other clients and servers out of the loop, and gives the project a monopoly on assigning skins, and makes it impossible to get a skin without being issued one or forking the game (and getting everyone else to run the fork).

Or, if skins weren't paid, they would be managed on a server-scale(IMO the appropriate place), with the skins themselves being hosted on a resource repository.
Re: Skin your cycle/trail?
but you'd stick to the ase format, right? I think more people would pay for it if you had 3ds support, or some of the graphical improvements mentioned here.
edit: hey this inspired me...here's a Mazuffer moviepack

Strikes me as an irrelevant detail... whatever format the game used, converters can always be on the upload mechanism.Word wrote:but you'd stick to the ase format, right? I think more people would pay for it if you had 3ds support, or some of the graphical improvements mentioned here.

Re: Skin your cycle/trail?
I think it's a good idea. To really make it attractive, it would be best if everyone could see your cycle. The "show off" value alone would drive many people to get an individualized bike. As a clannless person, I would definitely be willing to pay to have something distinctive! I can also see this business model working for both the graphic artist, and for the benefit of Armagetron.
Armagetron: It's a video game that people should just play and enjoy

that i would consider paying money for, yes.compguygene wrote:it would be best if everyone could see your cycle.
would not pay PER YEAR for it, only one time charge. per year, that would be bull.
but if its only for me to look at, heeeeellllll no im not paying

Re: Skin your cycle/trail?
@Word: That's ridiculous, haha.
@Zurd and gene: The point of it was, yes, everyone would see it.
@All: You know what would be cool? A team/clan package where all the guys on your team/clan have matching bikes/decals. Imagine a fort match where teams aren't just gold and blue, but maybe green and purple with custom bikes and the team name on the trails. you can guess how disgustingly pimped out some of the bikes and trails could be (flame jobs like on a street dragster!). The grids would look like MySpace after a while.
I'm not being sarcastic either, I actually support the idea. I've thought of something like this for Arma before.

I don't want to have to look at some player or clan's penis-cycle (or other such thing).
