Armagetron Class in school!

Post by ItzAcid »

Convincing the administration that Armagetron is an expert tool in web design, programming, etc. I almost have them convinced to start a class for it xD

You can get out of stupid classes like that if you rank as really smart, though. I've already taken bachelor level biology courses, and haven't graduated High School yet. But, most of the time, they make you take stupid classes that do not relate at all to your future job and education until you're in college and 18 or 19. Which means, you have to do the intro level work then...
" Wise men talk because they have something to say; fools, because they have to say something."

Ok, but why did I add this signature? I was like 15 and thought I was smart? What a brat.

You don't think there's value in broader education, knowledge, awareness, understanding, and general intellect beyond the narrow, myopic scope of your potential profession? You would prefer to simply be a mindless cog?

I understand why someone like Mecca would call civics bullshit. Civics is the study, understanding, implementation and expression, both philosophical and practical, of the privileges and obligations of citizenship and civic affairs. Put simply, it's how we form and get along in civil society, particular in one supposedly based upon a social contract. Someone like Mecca and crew, narcissists, borderline sociopaths, clearly have no regard for such things. But, do you, Cosmic Dolphin, really think citizenship is "stupid?" Do you really believe that all that matters in education is learning how to do a specific job making money for someone else?

We actually kind of do that. I mean by high school (age 14/15) we get to pick at least 1/2 our classes we are only required to take so much math, science, English, social studies. And we get to pick which ones of those we actually take. I liked it though.

Also, armagetron has taught me quite a bit of things. PHP, python, Ruby, linux, and probaboly other things i can't think of right now. I'm not so sure it should be a class, but for sure an after school club/sport/activity. As i just finished up my project that went along with this, that is where I learned ruby, Someday I'll get the results of that posted there. About 2/3 were 10-26 years old

Even when I was in school there was the implicit message and pressure that you needed to choose a field, if not a specific career, by the 8th grade. This was particularly hammered home in cases such as my own, having attended a magnet high school, and having to choose which magnet and submit an essay explaining why I wanted in that particular one. Fortunately, in my case the magnets available were 1) Math, Science, & Technology; 2) Communications & Media Arts; 3) High School-University (selected courses taken at UofL for credits); 4) Visual Arts; 5) Youth Performing Arts School. And there was sufficient general studies. (My middle school was a magnet school as well, although with only one magnet—MST, and I think only for AP students, if I recall.)

Even worse, there are many public high schools (not to mention charter schools) these days, and increasing in numbers, that are outright vocational schools. They then feed the private, overpriced trade/vocational colleges. They then feed the mindless cogs workforce.

Our education system has become largely oriented around nothing more than training children to be good skilled obedient workers. The priority in education is making sure kids know their place, and that their place is to follow orders without question. The proof is when you see kids in US schools ask the question "Why do I need to study this? It has no relevance to my life or career." That's the point, to get you to ask questions like that so you won't ask other questions.

Your analysis of my personality is terrible.

You cannot assume (well I suppose you could...) you know how someone acts and thinks in real life based on their personality in an online setting, especially when you almost never speak to that person in said online setting.

With out a civics class I have been able to "get along" and tolerate others far better than you will ever be able to.

I'm sorry, but are you role-playing here? Your profile doesn't say "chaotic neutral" anywhere, so it's safe to assume this is the real you (since Arma isn't a RPG).

I've talked to a lot of people in this game. Guess what? Their sense of humor, ability to cognize, verbalize, and all their idiosyncrasies shown in game and on the forums come through perfectly over IM, VoIP or in person. I have a friend that plays this game and he's much the same on the grid as in "real life." And another thing... This IS real life. Forums are a communication tool, that's all. You don't pass through a magic portal to an imaginary world when you login.

I'm sorry, I know it's not my place to say these things to you. But the "real life" thing is a pet peeve of mine.
